How Amelia Island Was Named

The history of Amelia Island is fascinating. The island was conquered under the control of eight different flags before becoming a part of the United States. Amelia Island was formerly known as Napoyca, named by the Native Americans of the Timucuan mound-building culture dating as early as 1,000. The French changed the name to Isle de Mar in 1562 and later the Spanish renamed it the Isle de Santa Maria in 1573.

Amelia Island was given its current name in 1763. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, scouted the area and named it in honor of Princess Amelia, the daughter of King George II of England.
