AMELIA ISLAND LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Downtown Fernandina Beach

Amelia Island, known as the “Isle of Eight Flags,” has had an interesting and tumultuous past, characterized by a diverse cast of pirates, shrimpers, nobles, confederates and Timucuan Indians. The community of Fernandina Beach emerged as an important seaport, a heritage that today can be seen throughout its Victorian-era architecture and charming historic district. Today, the island is home to Florida’s oldest continuously operating bar, the Palace Saloon, and boasts a 50-block area of homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Amelia Island Museum of History and Old Town, which is the last Spanish town in the Western Hemisphere.

Fort Clinch State Park

Fort Clinch is one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the United States. Although no battles were fought there, Fort Clinch was garrisoned during the Civil and the Spanish-American wars.

The Civilian Conservation Corps began rebuilding the structures of Fort Clinch In 1935. Thanks to their efforts, tourists can now tour the fort, while beachcombers, sunbathers, and swimmers unwind at the beach. Anglers are welcome to fish from the pier, hikers and bicyclists are invited to enjoy the six-mile trail through the park, and self-guided nature trails provide opportunities to learn about and observe native foliage and wildlife. The Fort offers a full-facility campground as well as a youth camping area, and provides overnight accommodations.
