Luxury Home Spa Design Ideas

When you’re looking for the ultimate in relaxation and self care, the idea of a luxury home spa naturally rises to the top. Pampering yourself without the need to leave home provides the height of comfort and convenience—and, perhaps best of all, you can customize your luxury home spa according to your most self-indulgent desires.
Here are five ideas to consider but, before we begin, here’s a word about the difference between a spa and a hot tub. According to Better Homes & Gardens, although the terms are often used interchangeably, there are differences. Without getting into too much detail, hot tubs—whether placed indoors or outdoors—are portable whereas a spa is built into its location as a more permanent feature.
Indoors, this can involve transforming a bathroom into a spa, and it’s possible that the current electrical and plumbing can be used. Outdoors, depending upon the present setup, plumbing and electrical lines may need to be run with excavation required for the in-ground spa.
#1 Keep Decorating Simple and Calming
It typically makes sense for upscale relaxation areas to have carefully chosen design elements using a minimalistic approach. By eliminating clutter in luxurious bath spaces, a niche of peace and tranquility can be created in your home. Choosing the right colors can play a key role, focusing on soft blues, greens, earth tones, and other neutrals. If you’d like a bolder color, consider using it on one wall. With an indoor home spa, bringing nature inside with greenery can create a zen-like environment while also helping to purify the air. Strategic use of wood in your design can also enhance the sense of bringing nature indoors.
#2 Center the Soak or Spray
In other words, as important as it is to have a calming environment for your luxury home spa, function needs to be at the heart of this space. So, early on, you’ll want to decide what high-end spa features you’ll want to incorporate to allow it to function well. You may, for example, think that long soaks in deep and comfy tubs are ideal. Or you may imagine a steam shower or one with a range of spray options. Depending upon the size of the spa, you might include both!
Although tubs and showers don’t need to be placed in the literal center of the room, the spa’s design should be constructed with these high-end spa features in mind. One of the key features to consider: the faucets. Although we just mentioned that keeping the space simple in design can create a relaxing ambiance, you could jazz up the faucets: from brass to chrome and other eye-catching materials, you could go sleekly modern or capture the essence of days gone by for a touch of traditional charm.
#3 Luxuriate in Light
Imagine just the right kinds and levels of illumination that will allow you to spotlight your
luxury home spa while preserving it as the relaxing space it’s intended to be. A chandelier might create the high-end look you want while dimmer switches allow you to enjoy just the right ambiance. Also consider skylights, wall sconces, track lighting, and more.
As you’re creating your luxurious bath spaces, consider how you can use, relocate, or expand windows to let in just the right amounts of natural light. Make it easy to open and close the window coverings—and, as a true showstopper, what about a uniquely designed stained glass window that lets in a rainbow of hues when the sun shines?
#4 Incorporate All of Your Senses
So far, we’ve talked about what the spa might look like and the soaks and sprays that can make you feel wonderful: the senses of sight and touch/feel. Here’s information about the other senses:
- Use scented candles, essential oil diffusers, incense, and so forth to make the upscale relaxation areas smell really good. Calming scents can include lavender, vanilla, and lemongrass along with whatever ones make you feel good and help you to relax—perhaps a scent associated with an especially happy memory. Also consider the scents of the soaps, scrubs, lotions, and so forth that you’ll use in your luxury home spa.
- You can pipe in relaxing music of choice into your luxury home spa. Plenty of scientific evidence exists to show that music can help people to lower levels of anxiety, reduce sensations of pain, and release endorphins that contribute to a sense of well-being. You could also play meditative beats that can help you to focus and calm yourself as you relax your muscles.
- Prepare infused water drinks to enjoy in your luxurious bath spaces. Here are eight simple recipes that use fruit, vegetables, and herbs to enhance the flavor of the refreshing water. The longer the infusion, the better the flavor, so consider infusing overnight. If you’d like a cold drink in your luxury home spa, include a small refrigerator in the space.
#5 Include Plush Towels, Rugs, and Robes
Quality materials to consider for your towels include Turkish cotton, long-staple cotton waffle weave, fouta, and ribbed cotton. Have a shelf within easy reach and roll the towels into the shelf. If you desire, a heated towel bar can add yet another touch of luxury. Plush rugs that feel marvelous under your toes are a nice touch, and be sure to have a couple of robes hanging on hooks nearby. Place a stool or two near the tub or shower, and you should be all set.
