Closet Design Ideas For Luxury Homes

No matter what size your closets are, there are plenty of ways to make them look and function better. If you have the opportunity to build a closet design from scratch for a brand-new home or you just want to upgrade the closets you have, the following ideas can help you create a closet design that expresses your personal taste and style.

Walk-in and Primary Closet Design Ideas

The closet in an owner’s suite is an important space. It’s where the bulk of your wardrobe is stored and a place you use every day. Whether you have a walk-in or reach-in closet, here are several ways to dial up both the luxury and the functionality:

  • Plan for double-hang closet rods to give yourself space for twice as many clothes.
  • Include as many drawers as you can. They keep things looking neat, and you can store more items in them than you can on hangers.
  • For an interesting look and to increase your storage options, include various heights and widths on built-in shelves, hanging rods, and cabinets.
  • Look up: Whether the ceiling in your closet is eight, nine, or 10 feet, increase your linear storage room by adding a shelf (or two) above all the hanging rods.
  • If you have a lot of jewelry, consider adding jewelry drawers to your built-in closet organizer. Their shallow depth and separate compartments make finding just the right piece much easier.
  • Plan ahead for storage for miscellaneous items, such as hats and handbags that can be hung on hooks.
  • Consider including a window for natural light if you’re building or remodeling a home.
  • Slanted shoe shelves let you see your entire collection of shoes at a glance. If space is at a premium, you can swap out the shoes you keep on the shelves according to the season.
  • If organization is high on your closet design wish list, add tie racks. These can be either mounted in a fixed position on the wall or slide out from a built-in cabinet and can hold scarves as well as ties.
  • Keep the laundry contained in a tilt-out laundry hamper built into your organizer. Look for one with a removable insert for easy transport to the laundry room.

Luxury Closet Extras

If you have the space and the budget, these luxury touches can take your closet design over the top:

  • A custom storage island: Just as it does in a kitchen, an island in your walk-in closet adds drawer and/or shelf space, plus counter space. Since the top is likely to be smaller than one on a kitchen island, it also allows you to use a luxury countertop material without breaking the bank. Islands are among the most popular features in the walk-in closets of high-end homes.
  • A chandelier: Ordinary overhead lighting won’t do in a luxury closet. Max out the glamour with a tasteful chandelier over the island.
  • A resting bench: Instead of having to take the day’s outfit over to the bed to put on, just have a seat on a comfortable upholstered bench that’s right inside your closet.
  • A full-length mirror: Check your look without even leaving your closet. If you’re a little tight on space, look for a fold-away mirror that you can tuck away when you’re not using it.
  • A vanity table: If you’re among the lucky few who can designate an entire room as your closet, you can include all of the above features and a dressing or vanity table.
  • Laundry appliances: For the ultimate in luxury and convenience, plan for a washer and dryer in or even next to your closet.

Avoid These Designer Closet Mistakes

Unless you already have some experience in creating a custom closet, you may not be aware of some of the pitfalls lurking in the design process. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your closet design:

  • Decluttering: Knowing just what you will need to store in your new closet is a smart first step in the planning process. Sort your items into keep/donate/discard piles and think about whether you have any unused spaces elsewhere in your home that can accommodate things you want to keep but don’t need to have handy.
  • Shelf depth: Determine what you’ll want to store on shelves and whether you need just one size or both shallow and deep shelves to accommodate your belongings. It may be hard to change this arrangement after your closet is built.
  • Shoe space: Unless you’re a fashionista, you may not give sufficient thought to how much shoe storage space you need. Take the time to assess your shoe collection and plan accordingly.
  • Lighting: We’ve all been there—you’re searching for an item in your closet, but only the middle of the floor is lit by a single overhead fixture. Think about how to light up the dark corners and high shelves so that everything can be easily seen. Today’s rechargeable LED lights can be a great solution: They come in all sizes and price ranges and can be used in almost any spot in your closet. If you have any home automation devices, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Echo devices, you can use smart bulbs that allow you to turn closet lighting on and off with your voice.
  • Flexibility: Closet organizing systems are essential, but consider whether you want to build flexibility in the future. Fixed components may serve your needs today, but may fall short tomorrow. If you can, include closet rods and shelves that can easily move higher or lower as your needs change.
